Regarding the transition from hourly to 15-minute prices

Estimated time to read: 2 min

We at Perific would like to inform you about a coming change in the energy market. Many energy companies in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic region will soon switch to 15-minute prices instead of hourly prices. This means, among other things, that those who have chosen a spot price-based electricity contract will be charged based on the new 15-minute prices. It is important to note that this only affects the electricity cost on the electricity trading invoice, not the cost of capacity contracts or other grid fees. The recently introduced capacity contracts for the electricity grid will continue to be priced per hour, which means that our new features within "Perific Shield" will not be affected by the transition to 15-minute prices for the purchased energy.

Perific is closely monitoring the developments to see what the new 15-minute prices will mean for the total cost of both energy and capacity. We do not believe the energy cost will be significantly affected. However, we believe that the transition to 15-minute prices makes it even more interesting to optimize energy use based on capacity contracts instead of hourly or 15-minute prices for the purchased energy.

Currently, we do not plan to change our control system to 15-minute prices. We believe that large energy consumers like EV charging and heat pumps are not designed to be activated and deactivated every 15 minutes. Therefore, we will continue to use the hourly prices that will still be provided by NordPool.

We plan to add functionality to the Perific app to show the new 15-minute prices. This will give everyone an understanding of what the transition to 15-minute prices means in practice.
